Even if you tell me that science fiction isn’t your game, I get it. It wasn’t mine either, but I tried reading it. I found some real gems in the book. At the end of the day, it’s about telling a good story. And these authors tell great stories.

Today, we meet Shawn Scott Smith, author of The Calypso’s Last Sunrise in the Space Wizards short story anthology.

1. Do you have any hobbies?

I’m addicted to pinball, playing the game, playing in tournaments, collecting machines, fixing old ones, and fully obsessed with the hobby.

2. If you had the opportunity to live on a colony on Mars, would you go? Why/why not?

Probably not. Simply because I don’t think I have it in me to survive the rocket launch, or the low gravity, or any of the stressful bits. I’ll just stay here on earth and let the brave people go.

3. What themes do you seem to return to, whether you mean to or not?

Longing, nostalgia. They seem to creep up in my writing whether I’m wanting them there or not.

4. What’s one thing you’ve learnt about writing that you wish you’d known earlier?

That it is hard, and that sometimes you can’t force the brain to actually be in the mood for it. Has to be natural, for me at least.

5. What first drew you to contribute to Space Wizards?

How do you see Space Wizards and not be drawn to it?

6. If your story were adapted for screen, what kind of adaptation would suit it best?

Maybe a miniseries, but probably a low-budget Saturday night TV movie.

7. If your story were a cocktail, what would it be called?

I think my story’s title is perfect for a drink name. Calypso’s Last Sunrise. A little bourbon, some lime and orange bitters. Sounds good.

8. Star Trek or Star Wars and why?

I like them both, but Trek wins for me because when it hits right on the humanity bit, it hits perfectly, and that makes it something to be proud of.
